All Eyez On Me.

No spoilers please!  Um, how can you have a spoiler to a movie when you already know the story lol.

So we finally went to see All Eyez On Me and I’ll just say that it was good. On one hand, if you loved Pac, you’ll like the movie. On the other hand, if you loved Pac, you might not like the movie. Let me explain. I’ve been reading up on some reviews from critics and fans alike saying how the movie didn’t live up to the hype or how it wasn’t truthful.  This movie is not a autobiographical film, its just a story about Tupac life. For that reason, there are fictional characters and scenes in the movie that didn’t happen.

The casting wasn’t too bad.  maxresdefault Demetrius Shipp Jr really did look like Pac with the exception of one thing…his damn right eyelid lol. It drops down too much, but besides that one fault, he was perfect for it. Danai Gurira did an outstanding job portraying Afeni Shakur.  I seriously hopes that she get an award for her performance, and no, not a BET award.  One casting call that did piss me off was the casting of Dr Dre.  Whoever chose Harold House Moore is an idiot. Why they didn’t ask Corey Hawkins to play the part is beside me. Harold looked more like T.I. than Dre. I guess while were on the topic of casting, I also wish they would have used R. Marcus Taylor as Suge Knight instead of Dominic Santana.  Speaking of Dominic, there is one rapper that I would like to see him play is Big Pun. He looks just like him.

Besides Rocky Horror Picture Show, this is the only other movie that i can recall being at where everyone was singing along with the movie.  There is one story that I wish they would have included in the move and that is the story of Janet Jackson wanting Pac to get a HIV test prior to their romance scene in Poetic Justice.

This Sept., it will be 21 years since his passing.  For those of us who were teens or young adults in the 90s, he was our generations Elvis.  I remember begging my mom outside of Best Buy for her to buy me “Me Against The World” because the dick working wouldn’t sell me the tape because of the Parental Advisory sticker on it. She ended up giving in and I was hooked.  I think i played “Keep Ya Head Up” and “Dear Momma” till the tape wore out.

With Tupac, his music is still relevant today.  You can take “Changes” and put it as a soundtrack to today’s events and you’d think Pac wrote it yesterday.  Some of the older generation may only see Pac by the negatives they’ve seen on TV.  But let’s look at the positives of a verse vs someone like Niki Minaj.

“I wonder why we take from our women, why we rape our women, do we hate our women? I think its time to kill for our women. Time to heal our women, be real to our women.”- Tupac “You a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe, you a stupid hoe, you a stupid hoe, you a stupid hoe (yeah), you a, you a stupid hoe…”- Nicki Minaj

The positive thing about music is that no matter how long an artist has passed, we will always have Bowie, Tupac, Sinatra, Elvis, Selena, Whitney, etc.

Well, there really isn’t much you can say about this stupid ass video.  First off, I used to be a Iggy Azalea fan when she was underground. But of course as it usually happens when artist go mainstream, their music starts to get too commercialized.  Second, whoever the parents are of these kids can eat a bowl of dicks. At what point in time while standing there during the taping of the video did they start to think, “Im so proud my kid is in a video that’s basically soft porn”. Third, Iggy already had an ass on her so why the hell did she have to go get butt implants/injections?  Shit just doesn’t look natural.

We are gathered here today, to get though this thing called life…

2016 is turning into the year of celebrity deaths.  Hearing about Prince’s death today was a surprise that was right up there with Kurt Cobain, Micheal Jackson and David Bowie.  Of course some will mention Lennon and Elvis, but I am only speaking of artist in my time.

Prince had 48 records, although about 10 of those were greatest hits.  I wasn’t a huge Prince fan but i did own three of his CD’s,  Purple Rain, Batman Soundtrack, and Diamonds and Pearl’s.  Of course he had other hits that i liked, but again I wasn’t a big enough fan to keep buying more CD’s.

The movie Purple Rain is right up there with Shawshank Redemption, if you are flipping through the channels and see that it’s on, it stays on.  The great thing about that movie is that it had one of the best soundtracks of all time.  I can only imagine how people felt seeing it in the movie theaters, you got to see a movie and basically a free concert.

The cool thing about him was how many damn songs he wrote for other artist, all while not including his name as the writer.  Nothing compares 2 U by Sinead O’Connor, Manic Monday by Bangles, Stand back by Stevie Nicks, How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore by Alicia Keys just to name a few.  Lyrically the guy was a genius.

I heard about Prince’s death from my wife.  After she told me, the first thing I (along with probably hundreds of thousands of fans) was go to YouTube to jam out to his music.  The problem is though, Prince didn’t allow his music on YouTube. He was the Lars Ulrich before Lars.  Prince felt that since isn’t getting paid loyalties from YouTube, his music shouldn’t be on it.  So now I sit here typing this, listening to an older version of Purple Rain that someone just uploaded on YouTube.  People must think that just because he is now dead, that his estate wont continue to remove music lol

The Goblin King is now joined by a Prince

I’m not worried at all.

With all the crap going on in the world today, along with the trials and tribulations of daily life, this song sums it up.  I believe this song is a few years old, but for some reason I just heard of it and fell in love with it.  This is pretty much how I’m looking at things right now.  Nowhere else to go but up.  The song is so simple lyrically.

I’m Not Worried at All
All round me burdens
Seem to fall
I’m not worried at all
I’m not worried at all
I don’t worry
All day long
All round me burdens
Seem to fall
I’m not worried at all
I’m not worried at all
Just I’m not evil
I just can not see
He told me to pray
Just for me
All round me burdens
Seem to fall
I’m not worried at all
I’m not worried at all

Having my Dale Earnhardt Sr. moment.

Just as Earnhardt was so close to winning the Daytona 500 with only 3 laps to go before hitting a wall, I too have hit a wall. I’m in my last class for my Master’s and can’t get past this writer’s block.

I’m doing my paper on the connection of PTSD and Veteran suicide.  I have my usual writing supplies, a venti cool lime refresher from Starbucks and Ottmar Liebert’s “Waiting 4 the Stars 2 Fall” playing on continuous loop.  Ottmar Liebert is my go to guy for paper writing.  When I was younger, my dad bought his CD after hearing him on the Weather Channel.  How funny is that, getting music from the Weather Channel.

This song is beautiful.  What’s more awesome is how much is sounds like “Camilla” from Art of Noise.  I don’t know if it was supposed to be similar but I like it.

Well, I guess i’ll suck it up and just start typing some on this paper.

Music to my ears…

First let me start by saying that I tried Tumblr’s blog and my god it was confusing. I’ll just stick to this.

Do you have a song that you can listen to non stop?  Do you have a song that can instantly put a smile on your face?  Do you have a song that as soon as you hear the first note, it brings a tear to your eye?  What about a song that you want played for your funeral?  Ok that last question is kind of weird but people choose their funeral song more often than you may think.

Non stop-

I’ll fly with you by Gigi D’Agostino.  This has to be one of my favorite songs.  It brings me right back to my days in the service.

Put a smile on my face-

Part time lover by Stevie Wonder. Something about this song just puts a smile on my face.  As soon as the first note hits, I remember visiting my mom in Arizona.

Brings a tear-

When my parents got divorced I remember my mom telling me that we’d be under the same bright star.

Funeral song (im dead serious on this pun intended)-

I’ve loved this damn song since i could first remember hearing it sampled by Jay Z.

We interrupt this program….

Originally written in 2012, updated 2016.

I was driving past a group of school students today and it occurred to me how screwed up our society is.  Our generation (X)  is to blame..why?  Lets think about this.   18 years ago i graduated high school.  Our generation started the baggy pants hangin off our ass look.  We had the “gangster” movies, such as Menace to Society, Boyz  in the Hood, Colors, Reservoir Dogs, south central…etc.  NWA was saying ” Fuck the Police”  We heard Ice T scream ” Cop Killer”, who ironically played a cop on NBC.  Ice Cube was  preaching “I didn’t even have to use my A-K, Today was a good day”.  Now he stars in Disney movies. Tupac and Snoop said ” ain’t  nothin but a gangsta party”.  Tupac is dead and Snoop doesn’t really do much of anything.

Rap music hasn’t changed in the past 18 years….it’s the same shit just recycled.  You can rap about ass, titties, bitches and what not for only so long.  Music today is garbage.  Freddie Mercury wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody” by himself.  Then you look at “Run the World (Girls)” by Beyonce and it list Adidja Palmer, Beyoncé Knowles, David Taylor, Nick van de Wall, Shea Taylor,Terius Nash and Wesley Pentz as co-writers.  Why the hell does it take 7 people to write a 4 minute song?

When I was in Junior High, the internet was just getting started. Of course, not the internet of today.  No social media. No music downloads.  No buying things online.  If we needed to look up something for school we had to go to the library and get a book.  We didn’t have Google to answer every question for us.  Kids today wouldn’t know how to use an index, or what it’s like to use a paper bag as a book cover.

Those 9, 10, 11 year olds i saw today are carbon copies of who we were 18 years ago.  Only now it’s our fault they can’t write, read, or talk properly.  I know that i don’t always use proper English or that i might use slang in my writings,  but when i am around kids, i do try to use proper English.  When did our generation get lazy with raising kids?  Growing up, if someone’s mom came out yelling you knew damn well every one of us was going to get yelled at.  That’s not the case today though. The government has put the power in the kids hands, however some parents think their kids can do no wrong.  “Not my baby, he/she knows better”.  yada yada yada.  It’s like we want the schools to babysit the students but when it comes time for the schools to be the “parent” and discipline the students, all hell breaks loose.  We are seeing this now with the entitlement generation.  Instead of laughing at how the prior generations did things, they are trying to change our history so they don’t get offended.  Schools can’t give out Ds or Fs because it will make the kid feel stupid…no shit, that’s the point.  It’s letting you know you need to buckle down.  Can’t play tag at recess because you’re not suppose to touch someone without their permission.  All kids get an award in sports even if they lose, can’t ruin their self esteem. Just yesterday I read a story on how you are not supposed to make your child hug a family member if they don’t want to, because it sends them a message that it’s ok for someone to touch them even if they don’t like it.  Get the fuck out of here with that bullshit.  If I see my nieces or nephews come in the house without giving my parents a kiss or hug hello,  I yell at them.   It’s called respecting your elders.

All we are doing is setting our kids up for failure when they reach society and realize they are stupid and they are not always going to get praised for coming in second.  These are the same kids who are going to end up shooting up people because they didn’t get their way and they can’t handle the pressure or rejection.

As for the current Entitlement generation, we need to stop allowing them to change history.  Here’s the thing though, we made them who they are. We gave in to them, when really a simple no would have worked.  Now you have a bunch of young adults who want everything for free or want things exactly how they want it, with no chance of a compromise.   This is one reason why Bernie Sanders is so popular with the youth.  They want free college and $15 minimum wage, and they don’t care that you have to rob Peter to pay Paul.  They don’t understand that Peter is going to go broke one day because you sucked his wallet dry.

Our country was built on the strength of each generation learning from the prior’s mistakes, and building off of it.  That’s not the case anymore.  These kids today are going to be the ones that we are going to have to rely on to care for us when we become seniors.  To be honest, that’s scary.

Ground control to Major Tom

As I was laying in bed late last night/ early this morning, I did my pre sleep ritual of scanning the internet one last time.  I saw that my friend put a quote up by David Bowie, which i thought was kind of unusual being that she’s never quoted Bowie or anyone really for that matter.  Then, as I opened Twitter, I saw the news.  Bowie was gone.  I layed there, honestly, with tears in my eyes.  I have gotten teary eyed only one other time for an artist, and that was Michael Jackson.

I don’t make it a habit of feeling emotional with an artist/actor passes because really there is no connection. You see this person on tv but that’s it.  You could die today and Im sure they wouldn’t shed a tear over you.  Unlike other artist though Bowie, was different.  He didn’t have his business out there like stars of today.  I’m sure if you asked 100 people if they knew that he had cancer, 95 of them would say no.

How, in the days of  the internet where someone can’t shit unless someone knows about it, was he able to keep this illness a secret?  I think that’s what i respect most about him to the end, he didn’t want that publicity or the sorrows of being ill.  I would think he didn’t want to be remembered as the great artist who died from cancer, but the great artist who made you dance and made you sing along to every one of his songs.

The awesome thing about David’s music is that it brought people together from all races and ages.  One thing I will always remember is when I sang “Magic Dance” with one of my 11 year old students.  I was like how the heck do you know that song?  He said that his dad loves David Bowie and that he listens to him too. I would like to think that that is what he would have wanted, to bring people together through music.

The music that he blessed us with always told a story. From Space Oddity, to Changes, to Ziggy Stardust, to Under Pressure to Little Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby.  Talk about opposites attract..Bowie and Crosby, how in the world could that work, but it did.

Just as Tupac’s last video “I ain’t mad at Cha”foretold his death,  if you watch David’s last video, Lazarus, I think you will notice that he knew death was coming soon.  As for myself, Bowie is not Ziggy Stardust as he might be to my parents, but rather Jareth the Goblin King from Labyrinth. His acting and his voice brought that character to life.  That’s why the tears formed in my eyes last, because another piece of my childhood died with Bowie.

I made a comment on facebook to my mom about her and my dad getting me Slipknot tickets for Cedar Rapids concert.  Well, last night my dad said, hey we got you an early birthday present. Yep, two tickets to see Slipknot with Hatebreed.  I just saw Slipknot back in Nov and I said I would love to see them again, it was such an awesome concert.  This time though, as i stated, they will be with Hatebreed and not Korn. I was not too familiar with Hatebreed so today, while filling out applications, I have been listening to them via youtube.  They have a heavy sound to them which I love so it should be a pretty good show.  Needless to say, i’m very excited to see them again and thankful to my parents for the early birthday gift.

Of course I’m at Starbucks and this peach tranquility tea I just bought smells amazing.  Usually I order my teas online.  San Benito is the name of the company  and their peach teas are awesome.  I first had the when I was stationed in Kuwait. They are based out of Italy, so when i place the order online I always try to find a distributor here in the US.  Funny thing is, I pay more for the damn shipping than I do for the tea itself.

I had a job interview the other day for a detention officer for the state of IA. I am looking more for a job where I can use my business admin bachelor’s degree.  Don’t get me wrong, the detention officer job would be great, but I’m kind of tired of being in the babysitter role. Plus, I think about being married now and I don’t want her to have to worry about me.

Superbowl is this weekend.  Seattle over New England 35-24
